SWIMMING SPORTS.
TO BE HELD ON ANNIVER-
SARY DAY.
I A deputation of the Masterton Amateur Swimming Club, consisting of Messrs Georgeson, McEwen and another- waited upon the Masterton Borough Council last evening in support of an application for the use of the Park on Anniversary Lay, 1913, for the holding of swimming sports. His worship the Mayor pointed out that the Council had previou:ly held- the matter over, because some Councillors were of opinion that a day should be set apart for the Council. Be personally thought that the athletic bodies of the town should combine and give a day's spbrt in aid of the Park, which was a public in titution and cojt a great deal to maintain He moved, in this ca*e, that the applicaion be granted on the payment-of a sum of £lO, on the understanding that if the sports were a financial success a proportion of the profits are handed to the Council. Ihe Mayor stated that the Council had in previous years had . a day set apart for itself. I
2 Cr Temple pointed out that the cost of maintaining tne Park was very la:ge. They had only £2OO on the estimates for the upkeep of the Park.
H Cr Ellictt supported the resolution, though he was of opinion they should hold an, amalgamated gathering in aid of the Park.
Cr Pauling thought that the Swimming Club should be given Anniversary Day, and that another date should be fixed for a combined Carnival.
Cr expressed the hope that the athletic bodies would support the Council later en in the holding of a combined gala day in aid of beautifying the hark. The resolution- granting the application for the u;e of the Park for Anniversary Day* was then put and carried. .' '" ' _,
