A CONNECTING STREET.

BETWEEN QUEEN AND CHAPEL

STREETS

A deputation from the Masterton Chamber of Commerce, consisting of Messrs. F. W. Carey, G. C. Summerell, and AV. B. Chennells, waited upon the Masterton Borough Council last evening to urge that steps be taken to construct a street to connect Queen Street with Chapel Street at a point ' near Ogllvy's butcher's shop. Mr. Summerell, on hehalf of the deputation, urged the Council to give the matter its prompt and earn r est consideration. He dwelt at some length upon the importance of making the connecting link in qiiestion, pointing out, in particular, the relationship of the western side of the town with the new fire station. The estimated cost of the work . was £4500. A three months' option had been obtained over certain properties, and Mr. Summerell urged that if the work Was.nqt.soou undertaken the,';-cost might be enormously increased.

Messrs. Carey and Chennells endorsed the remarks of Mr. Summerell, the latter suggesting that the matter be well considered and that a sub-committeo be set up .to go thoroughly into the question.

The Mayor stated that the matter would be given every consideration by the Council. At the same time he pointed out that he did not think the present Council would submit a proposal to the ratepayers. The proposal recently put had been lost, and the expense of taking a poll was very considerable. He recognised, the importance of the. street connection, but he wished it known that any money spent upon polls came out of the ordinary revenue.

Councillor Morris thought the deputation had put the matter fairly before the Council. He. was strongly of opinion that, the connection should be made.

Councillor Pauling strongly supported the making of the street. He thought a sub-committee might be set up to confer with the Chamber of Commerce. A public meeting might give them an indication of the feeling of the. public. Councillor Elliott asked if it was proposed to raise a loan over a special area. If it was, probably the Chamber of Commerce would defray the cost of taking the poll. The Mayor promised that the matter would be carefully considered, and the deputation withdrew. Subsequently, the Mayor stated that he could see no necessity for appointing a special committee. They all knew what the street was going to cost. All they required to knowwas whether there was any prospect of the proposal for a loan being carried.

Councillor (Morris thought that a special area should be, defined. The Mayor stilted that if the ratepayers would not carry a loan for so important a matter as drainage he was not sure that they would sanction a loan for this street. It was eventually decided that discussion of the matter be deferred until the meeting of the Works Committee a fortnight hence.
