MANGATAINOKA ATHLETIC SOCIETY.

(From Our Own Correspondent

A meeting of the Mangatainoka Athletic Society was held in the Library Hall, Mangatainoka, on Saturday night. There was a large attendance, and the President, Mr A. Ross, occupied the chair. For the running and cycling events Messrs J. Y. Crawford. J. D. Wilson and (j. W. Uiatwin were appointed judges; Messrs R. Smith and J. Cartwright being elected to a similar capacity for the field events.

In consideration of the excellent work rendered by Messrs C. L. Luke and McLeary, who have left the district, to the hociety since its inception, they were unanimously elected life members.

Messrs M. Vance, A. MacPherson, K. Williams, J. May and E. Harvey were elected a programme com • mittee; while the advertising was left in the hands of Messrs Chatwin, Vance, MacPherson, and the secretary, Mr Walsh

A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Vance, MacPherson and the

secretary, were appointed to arrange matters in connection with a special train for Boxing Day, with power to give the Railway Department a guarantee.

The Secretary reported the following special prizes for the dancing events, which were such a great feature of last year's gathering:—Mrs Brewer, pipe music, £2 2s; Miss Haran. £2 2s, Irish jig;' Messrs A. ' Ross and MacPherson, £5 ss, Pibroch competition; Mr J. Baird, £2. juvenile Highland fling; and Mr F. Walki ley, £1 Is, pipe music. The appointment of judges for the dancing events was left to a future meeting. Mr M. Vance was appointed assistantsecretary. This concluded the business, and the f meeting adjourned till Saturday, the 15th inst.
