A BOXING SALOON.

AND ITS CONTENTS. ! In the Magistrate's Court at Masterton yesterday, before Mr L. G. Reid, S.M., a somewhat interesting case was heard in which Charles MeDougall, of Msterton, claimed from John Hunter the .sum of £9 Is, and £3 damages, on .- ..ccount o£ boxing materials alleged to have been wrongfplly seized and retained in distress for rent of the Dominion Hall, due by one, William Wennand, to- defendant. The evidence showed that the Dominion Hall, the property of the defendant, was taken by William Wennand as a boxing saloon. The saloon was closed after some time, and the following goods were seized in lieu of rent:—Punching ball and stage ball, valued at £2 10s; boxingring fittings, £1; three sets, of boxing cloves, valued at £4 10s; screen, valued at 14s; three skipping ropes, valued at 2s'; one pair of trunks and belt, valued at ss. The defendant had refused to allow the plaintiff to prove his title or to take away the chattels, wherefor the plaintiff claim- j ed the return of the chattels and damages to the extent of £3, or the value of the chattels (£9 Is), and the sum of £3 damages, making a total of £l2 Is. A counter-claim was entered for rent amounting to £3 3s 4d, for the use of the defendant's hall by William Wennand. Mr G. H. Cullen appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr H. C. L. Robinson for the defendant. For the plaintiff, evidence was givj en to show that the goods which had been seized had been purchased by MeDougall from Claude Corbett, and Joaned to Wennand, who, was starting a boxing saloon. The goods had not been purchased by Wennand. After hearing the evidence of witneses, His Worship said he had no doubt that the goods seized were not the property of Wennand. An order would, therefore, be made for their return to MeDougall, and damages amounting to £2 would be allowed for their detention. Defendant was also ordered to pay £3 costs. The counter-claim was disallowed.
