A CONTRACTOR'S MISTAKE.

AND HOW IT AROSE.

The Greytown Hospital Trustees recently let a contract to Mr A. R. W allis, of Carterton, for the sum of £SS, for the removal of the old Greytown Hospital building, and the papering of two rooms. Mr Wallis not only removed the building, tut painted it throughout. He had been under the impression that his contract was for £l2O, which was the original price for doing the whole work. When the account came before the Greytown Committee, that body declined to pay more than the £75.

Mr Wallis waited upon the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board in Masterton yesterday, and explained the position, stating that he had done tte extra work in.good-faith, and nofcody had drawn lis attention to the fact that he. was doing more than was provided in she contract.

Mr W. Moore, a representative of the Board oh the Grey town Trustees, said he had known Mr Wallis for a number of years, and was quite satisfied that the mistake was purely accidental. The Greytown Committee had not intended painting the building for twelve months. Several members of the Board expressed the opinion that the building required painting. Mr Ewington moved that the matter be referred to the Greytown Trustees, with power to act, Mr Crewe said he would move as an amendment that the words "with power to act" be deleted. He thought the Greytown Trustees had neglected their duty in failing 10 visit the Hospital and detecting the mistake. He did not think it right that large sums of money should be expended iu this way. They did not know wheje the thing would end. The Chairman thought the conI tractor "was chiefly responsible i'or the overwork done and should not be paid the extra money claimed until a report was received. Mr Fisher suggested that the payment of <he account be held over for a month.

Mr Moore protested strongly against the imputation that had been cast against members of the Greytown Committee. He pointed out that the Committee had acted honourably in the whole matter, and had done its best to save money to the Board. Mr Cameron was of opinion that tha whole thing was a mistake. It waa eventually decided, on the motion of Mr Ewington, that the matter be referred to the Greytown Committee lor a report and recommendation to thfi noxt meeting.
