Mr Martin, Opposition organiser, is on a visit to the Kaipara electorate. Professor J. G. Black, who is reverenced as a sort of professional father by perhaps half the doctors in New Zealand, contemplates retiring from the chair of chemistry at the Otago University. A wedding was'celebrated in St. Matthew's Church, Masterton, yesterday afternoon, between Mr Jack P. Lett, of Langdale, and son of Mr T. P. Lett, of Lower Taueru,and Miss Maggie G. ljiiuns, second daughter of Mrs A. Elkins, of Johnston Street, Masterton. Miss Lett, sister of the bridegroom, was bridesmaid, and Mr J. Ogilvie best man. The Rev. Phillips, of Tenui, was the officiating minister.
News was received in Woodville yesterday of the deatli of Mr J. J. Murphy, which occurred in Auckland on the previous day. The late Mr Murphy was a verv old resident of Woodville. He built the Club Hotel in that township over thirty years ago, and managed it for i number of years. Prior to that, he .was captain of the Government steamer Sturt, and took part in the Maori War on the Waikato River and elsewhere. Another of the pioneers of Wellington, in the person of Mr Nein Wilton, passed away on Tuesday at the iige of eighty-eight years. Deceased's father arrived in New Zealand by the ship Oriental in 1843. Atter farming in the Wairarapa for some time the late Mr Wilton entered business as a seedsman on Lambton Quay. He hud lived in retirement, for many years. Three brothers are alive—Mr Job Wilton (Wadestown), and Messrs Charles and Thomas Wilton (Masterton). Deceased leaves a large family.
