A meeting of members of St. Matthew's Cricket Club will be held in the schoolroom at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday.
Thirty-five crates of eggs, containing 774 dozen, were despatched from Masterton to Wellington by the Egg Circle on Monday. The civil sitting of the Magistrate's Court will be held in Masterton to-morrow. The cause list is fairly lengthy.
An important sub-division sale of a property of 1000 acres, within a few miles of Masterton, is shortly to be held. The property, which is one of the finest in the district, is to be cut up into dairy farms. A miner and his three daughters, it is declared, recently recovered £BOO worth of gold from their beach claim at Okarito, Westland, for three weeks' working. The Appeal Court has reserved decision in the case Auckland Edul cation Board v. Public Trustee, with which it has been occupied for some davs.
A prohibition order was issued against a man, at his own request, in the Magistrate's Court at Masterton yesterday, by Messrs J. R, Nicol and J. Brown, J.'sP. Messrs Smith Bros., of Masterton, have purchased the homestead block of the Mount Herbert estate, Waipukurau, comprising 458 acres of rich land, together with'a twen-ty-roomed house and all farm buildings. I The tenders for the new Courthouse at Masterton, which closed last week, are being considered by the Justice Department. It is expected that a tender will be accepted in the course of a few days. Ashburton farmers in the fiat country districts states that there are indications that the increases in flocks this season will exceed the percentages recorded for the two previous seasons. So far losses of lambs and ewes have been comparatively slight. Mr J. B. Merrett, of Christchurch, editor of the "New Zealand Poultry Journal," assisted by Mr Rutherford, of Masterton, and a member of the Wairarapa Egg Circle, will shortly deliver a lecture at Taradale on the Poultry Industry and Export of Eggs.
A number of Australian shearers have arrived in Masterton during the last few days, and intend starting work as soon as the shearing season opens. In conversation with a representative of the Age,' one of them stated that there would be an abundance of Australian labour for all the work offering. Mr J. G. Phillips, who contested the Northern Maori electorate at the by-election which followed the death of Mr Hone Hoke, M.P., has acceded to a request to become a candidate for the same constituency at the next election. Mr Phillips intends to reside in the far north after next February.
It is not generally known that King George is the owner of a distillery, where some of the finest whisky in the world is made. The distillery, which is known as Lochnagar, ,is situated on the Balmoral Estate, near Abergeldie Castle, Scotland. The whisky manufactured is of the finest quality, and is sent in bulk to the cellars at Buckingham Palace, where it is matured for 15 or 20 years before finding its way to the royal tables. ' ' ,
The rabbit season closed at the Mataura Freezing Works last Saturday, and (says the Gore standard) but for several breaks would undoubtedly have constituted a record ill the number of crates handled, for any one season. Some 42,000 crates were handled, which is only about 2000 crates below the record season experienced 'two or three years ago, when something like 44,000 crates were put through. The number of crates handled for the season just past represents a total weight of 1200, tons. A man named John Gardiner Williams was charged in the Magistrate's Court at Masterton yesterday, before Mr J. Brown, J.P., with having assaulted Manini Rupuha Te Hianga on.. .September 28th at W'hakataki. Accused was further charged with having used obscene language in a public place oiv the same day. Mr C. A. Pownall appeared for the (informant, and Mr D. K. Logan for the accused, who , was remanded until October 14th. j Bail was allowed in himself £2-5, ' and one surety of £25. ' I
It is reported that in recent years | there has been a silting-up process m the harbour of Monte Video—a port well enough known to travellers by the direct liners from A r ew Zealand as a place of call for coalingpurposes. Owing to this cause the depth m the fairway has diminished, and it has been considered inexpedient to send the Shaw, Savill liner Athenic to Monte Video on her next Homeward voyage. The liner will be heavily laden with grain on leaving New Zealand, and her draught it is considered, woidd not permit her to negotiate the port of Monte Video with perfect safety and freedom from risk of accident. She will coal instead at Rio de Janeiro
Recently, reports a Southern exchange, a dentist examined the teeth !of tiie children attending the Teinuka school, and in reporting to the committee on the subject, he said that the figures would show an absolutely deplorable state of affairs. Out of the 314 mouths examined there were no fewer than 1969 decayed teeth, and of these only 348 <*ave reasonable promise of being saved by tilling He came across only two boys of 14 years of age with perfect teeth, and two girls of 11 years and one boys of 14 years with perfect upper sets of natural teeth which had never had any dental attention. Knowledge regarding oral hygiene was practically unknown in the school.
I ho nbiqmty of the taxi-cab in the Australian cities attracted the notice* of Dr. Thacker during his recent visit to the Commonwealth. He remarked that the restrictions as to speed were nothing like those enforced here. Wherever the drivers had a clear space they were allowed to drive at their own discretion. There 1 were no limits of four miles over i crossings, and, in fact, the cabs went over them at eight and ten miles an hour without any notice being taken. The drivers kept strictly to their own side of the road. The pedestrian traffic on the footpaths was also admirably regulated, everyone keeping to his or her own side of the path, and avoiding the annoyance so frequently caused by collisions with others.
The Dannovirke A. and P. Association has now a membership Ci 451. There are 275 sheep owners in the County of Wairoa, owning 647,477 sheep. It is reported that Kaponga people are considering the question of starting a bowling club. The dairy milk supply at the Ballance Dairy Company's buter factory at Konini has now reached over 2200 gallons. Owing to the magnificent spring TO season the lambing reports from all parts of the Wairoa district are highly satisfactory. A recent visitor to the Moumahaki State farm states that 1400 chickens have been hatched out there this season.. Mr J. C. Boddington reports that the rainfall registered at the Upper Plain for the 24 hours preceding 9 a.m. on Tuesday was 28 points. Cattle at the Waipukurau sale lastweek showed a slight fall, due entireIly to the fact that the rainfall has —4 I been a scanty one, and there are fears of a dry season.
Prince Tsai Tao, the in Chief of the Chinese army, has cut off his pigtail, and his subordinates hope that they will be allowed to follow his example.
It is expected that the extension of the Midland Railway to Cass from Broken River will be opened on November Ist. The distance of Cass from Christchurch is 72 miles.
In some parts of the Ellesmere district weasels have been playing havoc with young lambs. In the Southbriuge district the ' other a farmer came upon three weasels in the act of killing a lamb.
In the House of Representatives yesterday, the Hon. Mr Buddo gave notice that on the next sitting day he would ask leave to introduce the Municipal Corporations Amendment Bill.
It is said that the prospects of the development of electric current from Lake Coleridge are brightening, and that there is a probability of its being the first scheme to be undertaken 1)y the State.
A man who, was not given the proper change by a barmaid in an Auckr- ■ „-■ land liotel seized two bottles of cor- f dials as security, and the landlord gave him in charge for theft and threatening language. The cases were dismissed. ~
A great difference in ideas of values was disclosed at the Gisbome Magistrate's Court recently. One of the items in a claim was a fowlhouse, the value of which the plaintiff estimated at £lO. The defendant declared it was not worth more than 3s 6d.
Merchants in Southland are optimistic in regard to an Australian market for their oats. The other day four thousand bags left the Bluff in - i the Ulimaroa for Melbourne and Adelaide, this being the first shipment of any importance from Southland to Australia during the current season.
The police have instituted proceedings by information imder the railway by-laws against a resident of Palmerston South, alleging that he placed pn a railway train a man suffering from enteric fever without first hanng obtained the permission of the traffic manager.
The.'total public debt of the Wairoa County up to March 31st, 1910, <-j is but £28,611 14s for thirty-four J years of local government, says the ~\ Guardian. And all these years the local authorities have been struggling to make roads out of revenue and a six per cent overdraft.
The students who will go out under the direction of the Adelaide Technical School this season will class about 500,000 sheep. The certificates of competency issued by the school are eagerly sought after, as they are appreciated by pastoralists of South Australia and the Western Darling district of New South Wales, who, during August, September, and October, handle over 1,000,000 sheen, or 9,000,0001b of wool.
There are many signs by which the progress of a district may be gauged among the number being the efficiency and regularity by which the inhabitants are supplied by coach and postal communication. •At the present time the Tenui-Castlepoint, the East Coast, and Homewood districts are admirably served in this respect by Messrs Pinhey and Co.'s conveyances. It was a pleasing sight on Monday morning to witness the firm's four-horse coach leave the Post Office, with its well-groomed team in "tandem harness," an innovation on the Tenui track.
Docking operations are now in I full swing on some of the stations in ' the Wangaehu Valley. At Tikitapu (Mr Jas. Kennedy's) the work was begun on the 30th of September." Here the sheep are reported to be coming in very clean, and the fleece in good order. Speaking generally concerning the Wangaehu and Ihuraua districts, the condition of the pasturage is rather backward, the drying northerly winds and the frosts experienced for some time having retarded the growth of all kinds of vegetation.

The Special Committee of the House which has been sot up to investigate the Hine charges will hold • its first meeting to-day. Visitors from the Groytown, Carterton, and Martinborough Bowling Clubs have expressed their intention of being present at the official opening of the bowling season in Master ton to-morrow afternoon. "Labour" is evidently not a very live proposition in Wanganui. . On Saturday Mr D. McLaren, M.P., was to have delivered a speech on "The Labour Party: Its aims and and only fifteen rolled up! Mr A. W. Hogg, M.P., again addressed the House on the Defence Bill last night. The Press Association, however, did not trouble us with his particular views.
The Masterton Bowling Club has received an invitation to play the Hutt Club at the iiutt on November 9th. It is very probable that several rinks will make the trip.
A euchre tournament was held in Masterton last evening, between the members of Stonehenge Lodge and of Totara Lodge (Carterton). After a very enjoyable evening the .games ended with the score: Masterton 32, Carterton 25. The fact of two men dying from injuries through' falls off the roof in the State coal mine within one week is causing great anxiety at Greymouth. An enquiry is being held.
A Press Association telegram from Wairoa sates that a man named -James R. Robertson has been arrested there on a charge of deserting his -wife and child at Wellington.
A bacon factory proprietor recently stated that a much better miaiity of pig wa,3 being delivered at the factories since farmers went in more Tor sucrosine for feeding purposes. He stated that in his opinion that was the cheapest pig food on the 'market, that was if properly used. If soaked overnight it would go twice as far again as when mixed immediately, and would do more good.
Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., did not show much faith in the efficiency of swearing Chinese witnesses at Christchurch on Thursday. . A Chinaman took his position on the witness' stand, and the Court bailiff asked him if he would be sworn on the Bible or -would "blow out the match." "It doesn't much matter," said MiBishop. "If he is going to speak the truth, he'll speak it; if not, ho won't."
- Reassuring reports are still being received from all parts of the Feilding district, says the Star, as to the prospective prosperity of the dairying industry this season. Nearly all the factories and creameries will show an increased supply, due to new suppliers, whilst, in addition, nearly all the older ones who are not fully stocked have increased the size of their herds.

At the meeting of the Amateur Athletic Club in Masterton last evening, a programme of evening runs was ' decided iipon as follows: —100 yds, October 2<th; 220 yds, November 10th; 440 yds on afternoon of sports meeting. The runner obtaining most points in the three races will win Mr D. Case!berg's trophy.
An entrance fee of Is will be charged.
A meeting of the committee of the Wairarapa Amateur Athletic Club was held last evening. The balance sheet from the annual social, showing a fair credit, was adopted. Donations of £1 Is were received from Messrs J. M. Coradine and A. P. Whatman, and m-omises of trophies from Messrs D. Caselberg, A. Henderson, and Dr. Prior, these gentlemen being accorded a hearty vote oi thanks. Reinstatement forms were received from the secretary of the Wellington centre, and all wishing to be reinstated must apply to the local secretary as soon as possible. It ..was decided to hold an afternoon sports meeting in conjunction with the Swimming Club in November. A vote of thanks was passed to the ladies' committee for their valuable support in connection with the recent social.

A novel feature will figure in the Manawatu Show Ring competitions on the first day, open to all who are adept in using the stock-whip, lhe competitor is mounted on horseback and four objects are placed round the ring, (i.e., empty bottles). The ' competitors are lined up at starting point and then each in turn rides round -ie ring and endeavours to 1 cut off the objects with the whip lash. All competitors to use the same whip. The judge takes time on a stop-watch, and the competitor who succeeds in cutting off most objects in the quickest time wins the competition. The prizes offered total £3.
