THE DEFENCE BILL.
J he Defence Bill, in its re-construct-ed form, passed its third reading in the House of Representatives last night. As there is very little chance of its being mutilated in an Upper Chamber composed largely of political nondescripts, there is every indication that it will reach the Statute Book this session. The House is to be congratulated upon Jiaving produced a measure which will be of great service to the community. J hat it is not without defects is admitted. It is, however, an honest I attempt on the part of the Legislature to place the defences of the country, which have so long been in a perilously inefficient condition, on an effective footing. It now rests;: with the young men of the country •to determine whether they will supply the necessary quota for the adequate defence of the Dominion without compulsion, and with the Minister to frame such regulations as will prove workable.
