A "TURN DOWN."

The deputation from the MastertonWaipukurau Railway League, which waited upon the Prime Minister yesterday, met the usual fate of deputations, and was respectfully "turned down." The position taken, up by Sir.Joseph Ward was anything but logical. He admitted that the railway ought to be made, but said that there was not sufficient money for all the works that were necessary. It was, he said, 110 good starting a line which would not be completed within the lifetime of those who wanted it. If there is any meaning in this remark at a'l, it is that the line will never be started, for the longer the work is delayed, the less chance will there be of its being completed during the life of the present generation. The position is practically this: that »ir Joseph Ward has set his face against further borrowing for new works, and that, 110 matter liow important or necessary an undertaking may be, it will not be sanctioned until the lines at present in hand, some of which are gigantic blunders, are completed. The Masterton, Pahiatua, Waipawa and Hawke's Bay electorates can rest satisfied that they will receive-no consideration, so far as this railway is concerned, so long as the present Party remains in power. Ihey should know their remedy.
