DISTRICT NEWS.

MAURICEVILLE. A very pretty wedding was solemnised at the residence of Mrs J. Barrett, on Thursday, the contracting parties being Mr Clarence McKeown, second son of Mr John McKeown, Mauriceville, and Miss Bessie Cantle, daughter of Mr John Cantle, of Napier. The bride, who was given away by Mr McKenzie, ot Masterton, was dressed in a cream serge costume. A' white Merry Widow hat was worn, trimmed with "pale blue feathers tipped with brown. The bride was attended by Miss Kathleen McKeown, (sister of the bridegroom), who looked charming in a cream silk dress, and wore a white lace hat trimmed with blue silk. The bridegroom was attended by Mr John McKeown junr. (brother), and the officiating clergyman was the Rev. Olds.

A meeting of ladies interested was lield in the hall last week, for the purpose of forming a croquet club.

The first practice cricket match was played at Mauriceville yesterday afternoon, when the two teams, East versus West, tried conclusions. After a good afternoon's play the West team proved the winner by a good margin. Afternoon tea, which was very much appreciated, was supplied on the ground by the ladies of West Mauriceville. The match was followed by a dance in the old schoolroom, to add to the funds of the club.

PAHIATUA. A fire broke out on Thursday night at la o'clock, in the back part of the drapery premises of Messrs Clark atfd Manifold. The. Fire Brigade, under Captain Clifton, were promptly on the scene, and their operations prevented the fire extending to the front portion of the buildings. The Brigade is worthy of commendation for the manner in which they coped with the fire. A great deal of the stoc_k was destroyed. ■ ■■

The Age reporter was shown over the bowling green by the caretaker, Mr W. Mcßratney, yesterday. The green will be in splendid order for t.ne. openings this Month. There is a decided change in the weather, after a few days of sunshine. It is now dull and cold, with prospects of wind and rain. There were eight or nine labouring men passengers by the train yesterday on their way to ' the public road works at Pongaroa.
