(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, Last Night. | The Waoganui Jockey Club's spiing : meeting opened to-day in beautiful weather. There was a large attendance. Following were the results:— Flying Handicap.—Faunus 1, Electrakoff 2, Mon Ami 3. Also started —Ladv Medallist. Multiple, Emblem, Kareroa, Te Roti, Merchantman, Lady Moutoa. Won by a neck. Time, lmin 4 1-ssec. Maiden Race.—Cheddar 1, Big Blast 2, Euioco 3. Also started— Field Bell, The Quiver, East Wind, Colstream, Clorinda, Sir Tulloeh, Royal Patron, Falsetto, Allurement. The scratching of Advocate for the New Zealand Cup came aa a surprise to many, as the son of Hotchkiss had been doing very satisfactory work at Ellerslie, and was reported to be undergoing a Cup preparation. In addition to this, he had been well backed for the big event. Merrie Zealand was backed last week to win the New Zealand Gup. At Maryborough on Friday he was somewhat sore previous to competing in the Martin Memorial Handicap, and consequently lost a lot of ground in the early stages of the race. Unless he gets over the soreness very soon his backers cannot expect to get a good run for their money.

The sires nominated for the Fourth Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes are as follows:—Charlemagne 11., St. Ambrose, Achilles, Elevation, Martian, Clanranald, Treadmill,- Boniform, Birkenhead, Merriwee, Gold Reef, The Rand, Obligado. Hierarch, Papakuia, Maniapoto, Soult, Royal Fusilier and Field Battery.

Provocation, a probable entrant for the Stewards' Handicap, is being coupled in doubles with the best fancied horses in the New Zealand Cup.

Mr H. McManaway has sold North East to Mr J.. Ryan for 600 guineas. The Euroclyden gelding |was bought for something like 38gns by the .Hunterville sportsman, and having since won several good races, has been a very payable proposition. Mr C. F. Lddy Lucy is reported to be recovering her form in Australia, and is expected to be able to run in trie MeSbourne Cup.
