COUNTY COUNCILS.
CASTLEPOINT. The monthly meeting of the Council was held in the County Office, Temii, on Saturday last, all the members being present. Correspondence was received from the Premier on celebrating Dominion Day. From the Public Works Department, requesting that returns should be supplied of the number of men employed on roafls where Government grants were being expended. Masterton County Clerk, re vacancy on the District Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards, and stating that Cr D. J. Cameron was willing to fill the vacancy, and that another vacancy had occurred on the Board, and submitting the name of Mr Jackson for the office, which was agreed to. From the Taranaki County Council, with copy of resolution re Government By-laws Bill, and asking that the member for the district be requested to support the By-laws Bill when it is before the Hoiise.— Consideration was deferred.
The Treasury advised payment of £356 Is lOd on account of £ for £, grant for the Whakataki Valley Road. It was decided to ask Mr Barton to complete the survey of the gravel reserve at Ngapopatu, also the deviation in the road at Annedale, and also to have the three acres for a roadman's cottage surveyed at the Terrace. The question,of confii'ming'a general rate of 9-Bths of a penny in the £ was considered, and eventually a rate of one penny in the £ was carried by 4 to 3.
It was decided that the Akitio County be asked to contribute £2O towards the repairs of the TenuiPakowai .ttoad, and that the Road Overseer, Mr M. Collins, be appointed Ranger, and that he be authorised to take legal proceedings against anyone who may turn stock on the roads to graze. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £795 10s 4d on general account, and £2o 6s 8d on loan account.
Accounts- amounting to. .£122 7s 2d were passed for payment. MAURICLVILLE. The iisual monthly rifeeting of the Council was held on Saturday, 24th September.' Present,—Crs. F. W. H. Kummer (chairman), C. Forsberg, C. Churchill Jackson, J. E. Perry, and H. J. Dagg. It having oeen proposed to hand over to the Horowhenua County Council the rates coming from the sections held by L. Darow, and the Shannon Land and Sawmilling Company, to be used on the road of access to their lands, the clerk to the Horowhenua County Council wrote stating that the money would be expended on the track continuation of the Mangaora Road.
The chairman of the Taranaki County Council forwarded copy of a resolution of his Council, approving of the By-laws Bill, and requesting other local bodies to do likewise, and urge the Members for their districts to endeavour to get the Bill passed this session. This has been done, but it was considered desirable that section 3 of the Bill, which makes it applicable only to by-laws made within twelve 'months of the Bill becoming law, should be amended by extending the period, otherwise nearly all the local bodies will need to.re-make their by-laws before they can take advantage of the provisions of the Act.
The District Engineer wrote, stating that an inspection of Mangaoronga Road had been made, and the width of the formation found to '.e 14ft, but in several places only 12*t If these narrow places are widened to 14ft lie will approve of the metal being laid. Tenders will now be invited for the work; also for the delivery of 150 cubic yards of meirl on Mauriceville South Road. Authority Avas given to order timber for repairing the bridge on Mairieeville South Road. Metalling repairs on Mangam».hoe Road were left in Cr Dagg's hands. Accounts amounting to £2B 'h-'s were passed for payment./
