MUNICIPAL ENTERPRISE.
Never, perhaps, in the hi stow of New Zealand was there such a progressive impulse in the various municipalities of the Dominion as at present. In almost every.-news-paper that comes to hand, from north and south, is to be found either the result of a poll of ratepayers, or notice of the intention to take a poll on the proposal to raise a loan for some municipal undertaking. If
the figtires. were aggregated, it would probably be found that authorizations have been made for the expenditure of half a million of money in the North Island. This is an indication, not only of the presence of a progressive spirit in the community, but of confidence in the stability of tlie country. The tone of pessimism which existed a few months back appears to have almost entirely disappeared. It is sincerely to be hoped, however,. that the return of prosperity will not be regarded as an excuse for speculative booms.
