THE DEFENCE BILL.
The Government has brought down a
Defence Bill which, though possibly containing minor defects, will appeal to the great bulk of the people of the Dominion. It is, of course, largely based upon the recommendations of Viscount Kitchener. The Government lias acted wisely in not I pressing compulsory service upon the young men of New Zealand, though it is clear that if they do I not avail themselves of the facilities | now offering for making themselves proficient in the use of the rifle, and in drill, compulsion will inevitably follow. The money which is to be expended upon the defence of the Dominion may seem large; but, after all, it is a comparatively small premium for an insurance against accident. It is gratifying to note that the leading members of the Opposition gave the measure their cordial support.
