MR. HINE'S CHARGES.

J The proposal of the Prime Minister to refer Mr Bine's charges to the Lands Committee of the House, of which Sir Joseph Ward himself is a member, and which is composed of seven Government supporters and three Oppositionists, may be justified on the grounds of expediency, but it will certainly not satisfy those who demand an independent enquiry. The opinions of Government members on the charges made by Oppositionists are pretty well known, and it is hardly necessary to call for either persons or papers. What the country wants is an independent enquiry by a non-political tribunal.
