AN APPEAL TO PATRIOTISM.
Ar W. Belcher, Secretary of the Sea- j .nen's Unionat Dunedin, is: appeal- I ng to what he terms the "patnotsm" of the people of New Zealand. He wants the Government to subside the Union Steamship Company to run vessels in opposition to the P and O. Company, because the latter Company not employ Unionist crews. He also insists upon he JSew Zealand Parliament abandoning its Imperialism and acquiring Z complete control of its. mercantile marine. Mr Belcher is like a., ■rood' many other people who strive for the unattainable. He wishes toreach the Millenium by a short-cut. Before he talks ©f a "white marine, he should ask himself, the question whv so many Chinamen thrive £ tfcity in Which he is resident. If the workers,were a little more patr£ otic" in the matter of their home dealings, they would at least gam the reputation for sincerity.
