THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1910 MINERALS IN THE WAIRARAPA.

Geologists, who, have visited the Wairarapa district from time to time have expressed "the unqualified opinion that the. Tararua ranges and surrounding country contain mineral deposits of an extensive character. Spasmodic efforts have been made by private individuals to prospect the locality, but no systematic and comprehensive measures have been, taken to exploit the ranges and. test their resources. The opinion.is entertained by a good many settlers that a payable coatfield exists- within a distance of seven or eight miles of the town. If this opinion is well-founded, no effort or expense should be spared in developing it. The value ; to Masterton and district of a payable coal-field can scarcely be conceived. I It would mean the introduction of an era of prosperity by which all would be affected. It is also stated that the indications of the existence of gold and other, minerals in payable quantities are'alsp most encouraging. A Prospecting Association was formed in the Wairarapa I some months ago, but its operations, I have, so far, not.been conducted on an extensive The towns 7 people have readily contributed J hheir qnota towards the cost of prospecting, but they have not been backed up, as they should have been, by the wealthy settlers of the Wairarapa. The Government has made special provision for the.assistance of prospecting and ; if the Wairarapa people were to take the matter up with some show of enthusiasm, they would have little difficulty in procuring a substantial subsidy. The members of the Wairarapa Prospecting Association are sanguine that a thorough prospect of the district would well repay the enterprise. They are, however, hampered through the lack of finance. What is really required are the services of one or more competent geologists to thoroughly explore the ranges and their neighbourhood, i If this requirement is to be met, either a strong local company must be formed, or. the necessary assistance given the Association already in existence. The matter is one which closely concerns every man act! -.veuaan ia* ttie cosnaunity. !
