CARTERTON.
Mr Thomas Bean, a very old resident of the district, died rather and denly yesterday morning He had been ill since Friday last with influenza, and got up as usual, vhin he collapsed in his chair, and expired almost immediately. The late Mr Bean waß 72 years of age. There was a good attendance at the Carterton Egg Circle meeting on Thursday evening, when Messrs Rutherford, O'Leary and Jones were present from -Mgeterton, and explained the working of the Circlfe there. About 37 names were handed in of those willing to become mem bers, and the following committee was appointed:—Messrs D. Reid (chairman), H. H. Armstrong, J McCausland, J. Callister, W. H. Baillie, C. W. Bridge. Mr W. Tucker was appointed secretary. The committee met later and decided to piocure a number of egg stamps and to get quotations for urates.
At a meeting of the Wairarapa Licensing Committee on Thur?day, the transfer of license of Hotel from Mr Collins to Mr Robertson; and Gladstone Hotel from Mr White to Mr Young were The Ladies' Hockey Club held their annual social on Thursday there was a large attendance, and an enjoyable time was spent. Messrs R. Crawley, cornet, and Miss Berrill, piano, were the musicians.
The Otago representative footballers left for Wellington yesterday morning. Yesterday the Borcugh staff were engaged tarring and sanding worn portions of High Street.
