THE WELCH FAMILY.

IN THE FOOTBALL FIELD. A moßt interesting and unique Rugby game was played at the Hutt on Saturday, between fifteen members of the Welch family, mostly from the Wairarapa, and a hutt team. The Welches were all blood relations, and equalled many teams now playing senior Rugby, i several being old and others present representative players. Tney ranged in age up to 52, uncles rubbing shoulders with nephews, and fathers seeing themselves outstripped by sons. Although all bore one surname, the Christian names were varied, William showing the only plurality. All the combatants showed a good knowledge of Rugby, and the Welchs played with splendid combination. The play was of a very willing nature, the referee being nearly/'off his legs." Many of the Welchmen were over six feet in height, and their opponents were "swept off their feet." The visitors' only failing was in the backs. The Welchmen won by nine points to nil, Kenneth Welch doing all the scoring.
