COLONEL GODLEY APPOINTED COMMANDANT.
TO BE GIVEN SUPREME CONTROL.

In the House of Representatives this evening, the Prime Minister announced that he had received a cable informing him that His Majesty the King had approved of the appointment of Colonel Godley as Commandant of the New Zealand Defence Forces, with the rank of Major-Gen-eral.
Replying to Mr Massey, the Premier said he could E not definitely state when Major-General Godlay would arrive in the Dpminion, but he would know in a few day J. His sal ary was £IOOO a year, with a house allowance of £2OO. He would take the place of the Jour officers who had i been receiving £525 a year each. The term of his appointment was five years.
In reply to Mr Allen, Sir Joseph ! W-t"d said the new Commandant would have supreme command of the forces, and the fullest responsibility in connection with matters appertaining to his department. When the Defence JrSill was before the Bouse he would make a fuller statement on the subject.
