FIRE AT DEVONPORT.
BIG BOARDING-HOUSE DESTROYED.
ALSO NUMBER OF OTHER BUILDINGS.

A serious conflagration occurred this afternoon at King Edward's Parade, Devonport, which resulted in the total destruction of Ventnor House, a large boarding-houte of thirty-two rooms, and four dwelling houses, nothing being left but a mass of smouldering debris. Three other places were damaged.
The fhe broke out in Ventnor House as a result of some clothea being left by the kitchen stove (o dry.
The Devonport Fire Brigade turned out and made a good fight, but were unable to stay the progress of the tire till a clean sweep had been made for over a hundred yards.
Following is a list of the places destroyed or damaged, with the insurances as far as can be ascertained: —Ventnor Boarding-house, totally destroyed, building insured for £ 9 .000 in the Alliance Co.; and furniture for £BSO in the South British. Sixroomed house, totally destroyed, building insured for £270 in Alliance; furniture for £l3O in the Royal. Three two-storeyed houses, totally destroyed; each building insured for £4OO in the New Zealand Insurance Company. Six-roomed house, partially destroyed; insurance on the building £2OO in the New Zealand Company. Two other houses were slightly destroyed.
The houses of Mrs Swinnerton and Mr G. Sanford were slightly damaged.
