HURUWBENUA RACES. | SIR FRISCO WINS THE CUP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) LEVIN, Last Night. The spring meeting of the Hor> whenua Racing Club was opened at Levin to-day. There was a fair attendance of the public. Heavy showers of rain fell at intervals, and the going wss heavy. The fields were large, but the totalisator turnover was below the usu*l volume, ihe heavy going making punters wary. The racing was cf good quality, and the first favorites won four out of the seven race?, Pollowing are the results:— Flying Hack Handicap, of 60 sovs; 6 furlongs —Penza, 9.1, W. Young, 1; Prancer, 7.6, D. Deeley, 2; Tina Toa. 8.12, P. Griffiths, 3. Also ran Succession 7.10, First Battery 7.9, Mediterranean 7.0. Penza had to be shaken up to win. Tims, lmin 20 3-ssec.
Park Stakes, of 80 sovs: 6 furlongs.—Multiple, 8.6, C. Jenkins, 1; Dervish, 6.10 K. Young, 2; Kareroa, 7.10, 3. Also ran—Tanekaha B.3,;Separator 7.8, Ascalon 7.4, Red Wing 6.12. Multiple Won fairly easily. Time, lmin 20secs. Maiden Hack Handicap, of 7C sovs; 5 furlongs—Vihration 8.0, T. Meagher, 1; Merry Frank, 8.11, R. Hatch, 2; Varna, 8.0, Mussen, 3. Also ran—Lares 9.0, Matipo 8.13, Ranguru 8.13, Moanui 8.13. Moutoa Girl 8.11, Perceler 8.11, Lord Kilcheran 80, Tamako 7.11, uwhiro 7.11, Dearest 7.11, Admiral Bell 7.11. A punishing finish; won by a nose. Time, lmin 7 2secs. Horowhenua Cup, of 150 sovs; one mile and a furlong.—Mrs Moore's Sir Frisco, 9.0, C. Jenkins, 1; Mr H. Eva's Bismarck, 6.12, L. McDonald, 2; J. Pascal's Bourrasque, 7.10, E. Lowe, 3. Also ran—lranui 8.11, Roosevelt 8.4, Koran 8.2, Tiptoe 7.10, St. Felix 7.10, Gold Battery fi. 10, Marathon 6.9, Repeat 6.8. Sir Frisco was running prominently from start to finish, but it was not a run away race. Bismarck ran from behind the field into second position over the last four furlongs, and Bourrasque finished strongly also. Iranui was fourth. Time, 2min 3 2 ssec.
Welter Hack Handicap, of 60 sovs; 7 furlongs.—Torpoint, 7.8, V. Lee, 1; Kanigkapua, 7.9, E. Lowe, 2; Rangikura, 8.9 W. Kirk, 3. Also ran—Teotane 9.7, Tina Toa 9.5, Waipunui 9.3, Notorious 8.9, St. Lumsden 8.8, Mallet 7.13, Prancer 7.12, Pakau 7.7. Torpoint and Rangikura showed up in the first few strides, but Rangikura dropped back a little after a couple of furlongs, and thereafter Rangikapua and Torpoint battled it out. Won by a long length. Time, lmin 36 25 sec. Hack Hurdle Handicap, of 70 sovs; H miles.—Te Ru, 9.0, W. Young, 1; Rosegrove, 9.0, C; Price, 2; Maharanui 10.0, 3, Also ran—Don Carlos 10.0, Gaelic 9.11, White Lie 9.5, Hawick 9.5, Porere 9.0, Castup 9.0. Te Ru was prominent all the way and won by two lengths. Electric Hack Handicap, of 60 sovs; 4 farloDgs.—Nukubau, 8.5, H, Gray, 1; Moreykoff, C. Jenkins, 2; i'urna, 7,7, L. Traill, 3. Also started—Conquestina 9.0, Magneto 8.5, Niwaru 8.1, Raupare 8.1, Lady Moutoa 8.0, Celebrity 8.0, Yorkshire 7.10, Subdue 7.7, Sienna 7.7, Toapanga 7.7, Lady Edna 7.7, Parewanui 7.7, Converter 7.7. The placed horses paced each other all the way. Won by a length and a half.
