The death is announced bv cable of Mr Charles Euan-Smith. K.C.B.

Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P., was yesterday a visitor to Masterton.

The death is aqnounced by cable of Mr Al'en Hill, the well-known Yorkshire cricketer.

Mr W. A. Flavel, manager in Wellington for the Westport Coal Company, passed through Master ton yesterday.

The death occurred at Taonui, Raneitikei, on Monday last, of Mrs Wratt, wife of Mr J. Wratt. Deceased leaves a family of eight sons and two daughters. Mrs Eliza Jane U'ark, a resident of Mew Zealand lor over sixty years, died at the houge of her s<a-in-law and daughter, t)r and Mrs 'Jhomas Pudney, Paraparaumv on Monday last;

Mr C. Triogham fof Wellington; and formerly of Pigeon Bush, who has heen on a visit to the Straits Settlements in connection with a rubber-growing undertaking, returned to Wellington by the 1111ooaaroa yesterday.

A very pleasant function, to">k place yesterday afternoon at the residence of Mrs A. J. Giddings. Renall Street, the occasion being a "Kitchen Tea" given by that lady to Miss Ivy Welch on her approaching marriage. Between sixty and seventy -■guests were present, and Miss Welch ■was the recipient of a great number ■of.-useful present-*. Dainty refresh* •merits were provided, and several' njusical items contributed to an enjoyable gathering. Mr V. A. Sutton, who'was, during the past eighteen months, cadet in the local office of the -Labour Deparment, left yesterday afternoon tor Wellington, where ha has received promotion to head office. Mr Sutton for the last two years actively identified himself in sporting circles here, especially cricket and hockey, being a member of St. Matthew's Club, also ef the Rival Cricket Club. His many friends will regret bis departure, but will be pleased to learn of his well deserved promotion. The members of St. Matthew's Club presented Mr Sutton with a brief >bag as a token of esteems
