THE DRAINAGE LOAN.

There appears to be some misapprehension. itttnei, mih'ols of certain rate-. ' payers of the Borough respecting'the rate that will have to be paid to provide for repayment of, interest and principal if the poll is carried: for "the drainage loan. In another column the Mayor, Mr J. M. Cpradirie, puts the matter in a clear light,' and thus brings confusion on tbose persons who have been, so industriously circulating misleading statements, obviously, as the Mayor says, with the intention of confusing the mind, of the intending voter in the hope that I the voter, otherwise favourably disposed towards the scheme, would vote against it. The fact that the ratepayers within the existing.drainage area. will only pay an increased < drainage rate of one-half penny; will, how.that, it-is made clear, no doubt result in the loan proposals being carried. What we .do feel is an injustice to property owners in Queen Street, is that .the values . put on the properties for rating purposes are far too high. The Council ought to forthwith apply to the Valuation Department to have the 'properties within the Borough re-valued, with a view to equalising taxation. The valuations put on the business sites makes taxation a heavy rent.
