TALK OF A STRIKE.
There is a strong opinion amongst coal merchants in Auckland that a general strike of miners is impending. Colour is lent to the supposition that a big strike is contemplated by the fact that as a precautionary measure a number of firms have laid in stocks of coal to be ready in the event of the men deciding to go out. The Auckland Harbour Board, to be on the safe side, has decided to store about 1,000 tons of coal at the Calliope' The Federation j of Labour is working on scientific j lines, and nothing has been allowed to leak out. Several men have been' interviewed with a view to elicit in-' formation -as to whether a strike is contemplated,* but they profess ignorance. Should a strike occur just when a good season's trade is. opening up, the loss to the colony will bej .serious. . 1 :;,.../ . .
