PONCAROA. A Ladies' Guild Euchre Party and Dance was held in the Pongaroa Hall on Friday, 27th inst., in aid of the Anglican Clrurcli. Miss Harvey carried off the prize for the ladies, and IMr C. Martin the gentlemen. A very enjoyable evening was spent, and dancing continued till one o'clock. At the monthly meeting of the Akifcio County Council held on Saturday, 27th inst., notice of motion of the proposal to raise a loan of £16,850 was given by Cr. Herbert. The money is for: —(1) Bridging the
Aohanga river at four different places on the Akitio Road. (2). Completing the metalling on the main road* from Masterton to Rakanui, and on the Rimu Road, and the necessary work in the Waikereru district. Also the road is to be metalled from Pongaroa to the Weber boundary. The mover said that the intended loan would mean a special rate of less than Id. The general rate is 3d, but naturally, once the roads are put in good repair there would follow a reduction. A loan is also on foot to complete . bridging and metalling of the Glenora road at Akitio. This road is the connecting link between Akitio and Dannevirke. Cr Burling said that the Akitio' County should look to Masterton, and not to Pahiatua, as the better outlet. Pahiatua had been taxing the Akitio County in the matter of contributing to the main PongaroaPahiatua road long enough. The last payment for this road, which is. outside the Akitio boundary, was over £6OO. The Council received a letter from the Masterton County Council in connection with the Waihoke and Alfredton-Weber - road, stating that the agreement had been duly signed.
The effect of this agreement is that Akitio County pays about £IOO per annum for upkeep of these roads within the Masterton County. At the conclusion of the formal business,' our popular engineer was the recipient of a handsome set of carvers and fish slice and fork, the gift of the Councillors on the eve of
his marriage. The Chairman, in making the presentation, wished Mr
Dawson every happiness, and gave him some good advice (not from per-
gonal which he will
doubtless take to heart. Cr Robertson said h.B had the greatest pleasure
in speaking highly of Mr Dawson's qualifications. The formation of the County was such that only practical experience could cope with the enor-
mous difficulties encountered. This Mr.Dawson now had, and all the Council felt that he had conscienti-
ously done his part for the ratepay-
ers. Mr Dawson suitably replied
