A FORTY-MILE BUSH CASE.
SEQUEL TO AN ALLEGED SLANDER.
ONE OF THE PARTIES BANKRUPT. • A 1 ttle incident in the Supreme Court on Saturday rnorninp, proved to be an interesting sequel, to a rase which caused a great deal of interest un both sides of the Tararua Range a few months back. It wll bs re membered that Jaa. A. WalFh, of PaMstua, brought an adion fir slander ggainst F. C Tumor, a well*
known Eketahuna resident, and claimed substantial damages. The slander was supposed to have been the outcome of a, visit of** party, of Eketahuna Club members to their brethren at Pahiatua, and Tumor was alleged to have accused Walsh of some shady work at cards.
Just as tha case was coming before the Supreme Court the parties decided, after a conference, to refer the. mscter to : arbitration. The arbitratorß%deci3ion proved disastrous to Walsh, for they found that liad not slandered WaiiihV and. that hej w*s justified in any remark* he may have made. Turhor was further awarded- the sum of J81'75 for coats;
and expenses. ' The amount awarded hot having been paid by Walsh, Turnor obtained a judgment of the Court, and that being unsuccessful, . he applied, through his solicitor, Mr Page, at the Supreme €* urt on Saturday morning, to have debtor adjudicated a bankrupt. Mr Turnor gave formal evidence as to getting judgment in Court for the debt, and its non-payment, after which his Fonor made an oruer adjudicating Walsh a bankrupt.-—Mana-watu Standard.
