TURF NOTES. [By "Zetland."] ) Really good nominations have: been received for the Marton meeting. In the principal event, class is weH represented by Sir Frisco, Bollin, Electrakoff, Ambrosian, North East, Lady Medallist, Uhlando and Roosevelt. The Wairarapa trained horses engaged at-the meeting are: Merrie Rose, Sandix, Te Utuatu, Gaelic and Flamingo. Rill, a full sister to Splash, is among the Maiden Handicap candidates in the Marton nominations.. When being trained at Tauheronikau last season she was considerably overgrown, and may be seen to better advantage with age. Sir Mauser, by Mauser—Culverin, owned by Mr J. O'Meara, late of Masterton, will probably make his debut in the same race. As before stated in these columns, Te Utuatu is being put through his training work at Opaki by Mr J. Cress. At the Hunt Club meets the Lethe gelding has been ridden very capabiy by Mr Tas. Smith. ' The thoroughbred stallicfti, Chatsworth, by Auric—Winifred, has been purchased from the estate of the late Robert Ross, by Mr W. Nix, of Tauherenikau. Some of the horse's stock in Australia will be raced over there this season. The Wairarapa Hunt Club is to be i congratulated on the entries reoeiv- j ed for its meeting to lake place on : September Ist, at Clareyille. For seven events there are eighty nom- . inations, and class is much better j represented than is usually the case ] with Hunt meetings. With such j horses engaged as Aberration, Hilar- J ian, Merrie Land, Sir Solo, Leahor'a, i First Consul, Miss Sylvia, British | Maid, Miss Hippo, Flamingo, and Golden Butterfly the public may expect to witness some really good racing. Mr Ulic Shannon will have the weights out up to time, and in the meantime it may be taken for granted that some of the horses here mentioned will be allotted fairly substantial inposts. Some Auckland sportsmen have conceived the idea of getting Carbine back, and have cabled.the Duke of Portland as follows:—"The people of Auckland want Carbine to die in the land of his birth. Will you sell?" Carbine was bred at the Sylvia Park Stud, and as a yearling was sold to Mr Dan. O'Brien for 620 guineas. Later on he was sold in .Australia' for 3000 guineas: At the elose of his racing career he was purchased by the Duke of Portland for 13,000 guineas. Carbine started in 43 races and won 36. Bis best performance wsas winning the Melbourne Cup, two miles, carrying lOst 51b, in

3 min 28jsec. As there wore no less than 39 starters, the task set th 3 son of Musket was a difficult one, but he scored like the champion he undoubtedly was. The stake money won by Carbine amounted to £29,476. At the stud in Australia he left firstclass horses, including that grand sire "Wallace, and in England he proved quite a success, his stock having won many races. Spearmint,, the Derby winner, was by Carbine, and he has left many other firstclass performers. The endeavour now being made by certain Auckland people is a most commendable one, and it is hoped that they may succeed in buying back to this country one of the greatest horses of the age.
