TO EXTINGUISH DEBT.
The problem of how to extinguish debt j is one which has defied a great many statesmen as weH as private individuals. It is, therefore, a matter for very sincere congratulation that the Treasurer of New Zealand, who long since earned the reputation of being a "wizard of finance," has evolved a scheme which will convert our liabilities into assets. The scheme is so simple, that the wonder is that some of the Chancellors of the British Exchequer had not thought of it years ago. How is it to be done? Well, you simply goon borrowing money, and making a sinking fund of it, instead of a national debt. When the sinking fund' has amounted to a sum which, in the aggregate, equals the national debt, then the national debt is extinguished. See ?
