CARTERTON.
The present price of bread here haa been the subject of discussion in the local paper's correspondence column. It appears somewhat strange that bread costs a penny the 21b loaf more in Carterton than it does in Palmerston North, where the coßt of production must be somewhat higher than in the country. The death occurred at Gisborne on Monday of Mrs Martin, wife of the late Mr James Carter Martin. Deceased passed away at her son's residence, after a painful and short illness at Jthe advanced age of 75 years. Mr H. Martin, of Carterton, is a son of the deceased lady. The funeral took place at the Makaraka Cemetery, on Wednesday atfernoon.. General regret was expressed here yesterday, when / the news became known, through the Age, that Mr Joseph Straw bridge, a former reei-
dent of this district, had passed away !at Cambridge. The deceased gentleman left here a few years ago for that district. The late Mr Straw bridge was a prominent supporter of the Liberal Party, and while here did much to assist the cause.
A concert was held at Clareville on Thursday evening, the proceeds being devoted to swelJ the fund being organised to provide the cost of the septic tank service recently installed. There was a good audience, and the juveniles were assisted in the programme by a number of local talent. A very pleasant list of items were given, those by the school children reflecting great credit upon their teachers. A written examination for noncommissioned officers' certificates uoder the auspices of the local Territorials is to be held on August 23rd. A practical examination will follow on September 9th.
