THE RATEPAYERS' MEETING.

If tke interest manifested in the ■proposal to raise a loan of £31,000 to extend the drainage system of Masterton is to be judged by the attendance of ratepayers at the meeting held last night, it does not speak well for the progressive spirit of the 'town. Possibly the ratepayers are satisfied to form an opinion upon the subject from the reports appearing in the public Press. It does seem, however, that if there is strong oppo(sition to the sckeme outlined by the Borough Council, the time and place for explaining the cause of that opposition was at the statutory public meeting provided for that purpose. The Mayor is to be complimented upon the straightforward manner in which he submitted the issues, and the responsibility for accepting or rejecting the proposal now rests entirely with the ratepayers.
