CHAIRMANSHIP OF COMMITTEES.

The Prime Minister gave notice yesterday of his intention to move that Mr Colvin be appointed Chairman of Committees. This decision has probably been arrived at by the Government after carefully discussing the position with members of his party. It seemed obvious that had the nomination of Mr Davey been persisted in, the Government would have suffered a defeat. Thus has Mr Colvin had the honour thrust upon him. It will be interesting to know how the new development appeals to Sir "William Steward and I his friends.
