A disastrous fir<3 occurred in the Southern Cross Biscuit Company's premises this morning, whereby the whole, factory ar.d its contents were completely destroyed, including bjilding3 comprising bread, biscuit, and confectionery departments, 100 ft by 35ft; store department, sJoft by 60ft; box department, 30ft by 20ft. The fire started in the rear of the factory, near the bread de artment, an;', aided by a strong wind, soon enveloped the whole of the buildings. There was a poor pressure in the mains owing to their being "dead ends," arid only the arrival of the tire engiriß saved the flourmill adjoining. fears were entertained of the fire spreadiiig to the tramcar powerhouse and sheds adjoining, and the cars were run out to the open, but the only damage was that the cable was elishtly scorched, and the switchboard was soaked with water. The insurances total £7,775, including £2,000 on the mill, uninjured- The following offices - are affected —t£oath British, Sun, Commercial Union, Ocean, Yorkshire, Australian Alliance, Victoria. About sixty hands have been thrown out of employment.
