MANY VALUABLES DESTROYED.
THIEVES AT WORK
Received Last Night, 9 o'clock. BRUSSELS, August 16. Among the things destroyed by the fire at the Brussels International Exhibition yesterday were collections of antique furniture ar.d ornamenfs from many private mansions. They were valued at £50,000. Old China from South Kensington, valued at £IO,OOO, was also lost. Valuable new pictures by English artists, including Sir William Orchardson, R.A., Mr Alfred East, A.R.A., and Mr J. J. Shannon, A. R.A., were burnt Amongst articles stolen during the fire was an aigrette worth £BOO. Several persona laden with booty were arrested. The destroyed buHdiDgs were insured fcr £92,000. Only sixteen pieces of pottery were saved in the British section. i home goldsmiths' work and an uncut diamond from the De Beers' mine were buried in the debris of the Balgian section.
