TWO STEAMERS COLLIDE

SEKIOUS LOSS OF LIFE.

I Received August 17, 9.20 a.ir. MADRID, August 16. | During a fog the German steamer Elsa collided with the Spanish steamer Martos thirty-two milas west of Tarifa, in the extreme south of Spain and fifteen miles west-suuth-west of Gibraltar. The Martos was sunk and thirtytwo of her passengers and seven of the ciew drowned. The Eka put in at Gibraltar. She is badly damaged.

FORTY-FIVE LIVES LUST

; Received Last MADRID, August 17. The steamer Mattus sank in two minutes. Forty-five persons were drowned, including a mother and three children, who wtie travelling in the saloon. The third-class passengers were principally fishermen, with their wives and children The captiir, who was a septuagenarian, went down standing on the bridge. One survivor swam for an hour. He was twice sucked under by a whirlpool. The Elsa saved sixty-five of the passengers and crew.
