THE FISHING INDUSTRY.
AT THE CHATHAM ISLANDS.
From Our Own Correspondent.
Since June last, when the regular steamer was here, till now, we have been half expecting the arrival of some vessel or other to begin j the fishing business again. When I say again, you will perhaps remember it was begun some twelve months ago by the "Duco," which vessel was lost on her second trip down here, thus putting a damper on a very promising industiy. Just ! like the luck of the Chatham Islands However, we now believe there are "two Richmonds in the field," or rather two companies about to try their luck at fishing round here. The fish they want is blue-cod, of which there is an abundant supply, and I am told the destination of the catch is Sydney. It seems a long way to send fish, but from all accounts it will pay handsomely. Let us hope it will, for we shall be in more frequent communication with the mainland. That's our selfish way of .looking at it. These long winter waits of two months between steamers are a sad tax on one's patiencs, and no one will be sorry when they are at an end,
