MASTERTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Masterton District High School Committee was held last evening, there being present Messrs R. Brown (chairman), G. Townsend, T. J. Thompson, A. W. Chapman, W. C. Perry. A. Hendry and E. H. Waddington.

The treasurer reported a credit balance at last meeting of £93 lie, and at the present meeting, after paying accounts, of £74 13*>. The first instalment from the Trust Lands Trust had been forwarded to the Education Board. ,

s The report of the headmaster showed the roll number at the main school to be 613; average attendance, 543; and percentage of attendances, 89. The side school showed roll number 177; average attendance, 152; and percentage of.attendances,' 86. In the secondary classes the roll number was 60, average attendance 56, and percentage of attendances 93." It. was also reported that Miss Hogg, assistant, who was granted a month's leave of absence on account of eye trouble, «b ad returned to her duties. Miss Bradbury, assistant, retired from the staff on the 29th ult. Miss White, of toe Board's relieving staff,; was at present temporarily filling the! vacancy. The third assistant in the secondary department was absent on the 4th and 5Mi inat. on account of illness. One of the pupil teachers had been absent this week from the ~

flame cause. Accounts .amounting to £l7 9a lid were passed for payment. Mr Chapman, one of the visiting members, reported having visited the side school, in company with Mr Waddington and the headmaster. It was recommended that the school grounds be graded and asphalted, and that the native grans be de stroyed. It was thought-that the Education Board would probably contribute a portion of the cost. The visiting mambe/s suggested that estimates of the cost of the work be obtained.—On the motion of Mr Hendry, seconded by Mr Perry, the matter was left in the hands of a sub-committee/ with power to invite tenders for the work, and- it was decided to make application to the Education Board for one-half the cost.

The attendance report for the month was received, and action decided upon in certain cases.

Messrs Thompson, Townsend and Waddington were appointed a visiting committee, and the meeting adjourned.
