OREGON PINE.
Should Oregon pine be imported to New Zealand duty free? This is a question which affects, not only those engaged in the sawmilling industry, but the whole of the community. If Parliament put sues the policy of Protection it has applied to other industries, it will impose a heavy duty on imported timbers. If, on the other hand, it considers that Protection imposes too heavy a burden upon the masses of the people, it will ipermit the unrestricted importation of cheap timber. The Government is on the horns of a dilemma, and is seemingly afraid to declare itself. Meanwhile, Oregon pine is coming to the Dominion in shiploads.
