ALFREDTON RIDING.
The Masterton County Council is pursuing the only reasonable course i open to it in asking the ratepayers lof the Alfredton Riding to express [ a definite opinion upon the question of amalgamation with the Eketa huna County. For years past an agitation has been on foot with the object of bringing Alfredton under the jurisdiction of the Eketahuna County. The strongest argument used in favour of the change has been the configuration of tha country. Whether thiß will be sufficient to induce the ratepayers to sever their connection with a body Which has admittedly treated them wall, remains to be seen. It seems almost a pity that, at a time when a Local Government Bill having for its object the amalgamation of the smaller counties is on the tapis, it should have been felt necessary
take a step whicn might involve a good deai of cleric*! expense and treuble. The matter has been so long under discussion that nobotiy would have suffered much injury by awaiting the result of the legislative attempt to widen the scope of local authorities.
