WAIRARAPA DEFEATS MANAWATU. By Telegraph— Press Association. PALMERSTON N.. August 10. The Wairarapa football team played Manawalu afternoon, under delightful conditions as to weather and ground. Play, however, was dull and uninteresting, both ( teams appearing to have a day off. The Wairarapa men had the best of the play, but there was not as great an advantage as the scores might indicate. Manawalu forwards failed to show the dash that they have shown on previous mafenes, and Wairarapa were quicker on the ball ail through. Manawatn backs at times tried passing rushes, but they were ususlly spoiled by an inacurate paEs at the fi»i3h. P. Ball, Hodate, and N. McKenzle were prominent among the Wairarapa backs, and Desmond in the* forwards; while the be&t work for Maoawattf was done by Hughes at full, Ramsden.and Bris coe amongtbe backs, and M. Carroll and Munro forwards. 1 ; in the first spell Hodge scored a try, which N. MeKenzie converted Iln the second spell Hodge scored , another try, which was unconverted, 1 and Sfeeet kicked a penalty goal, the game ending eleven to nil in Wairarapa's favour. At the luncheon to the team the President of the Manawatu Union referred to the continued neglect of country unions in its province by the Wellington Union, and need of their acting in concert and arranging home and home matches among themselves. Mr J. M. Nicholls.imanager for the Wairarapa team, commented on the way Wellington treated Wairarapa. He said all Wellington cared was to get the good players' from Wairarapa, and then it proposed to play them with its B team, which Wairarapa refused tb do, as Wairarapa had last year only been beaten by Wellington's beat team by a narrow margin.
