ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION.
MAYOR OF NEW YORK FIRED AT. . , l Received Augustl, 9.20 a.m. -.-'■■'■ MEW YORK,-August 9. An attempt on the life of Mr W. J. Gaynor, Mayor of New York, was made to-Jay, as he was about to sail for Europe on the North German liner Kaiser vVilh'elm der, Grosse. He'' was-at. first-reported to be dead. DETAILS OF TOE CRIME. BULLET LOCATED. THE DOCTORS ARE HOPEFUL. Received. August 10, 10 a.m. NEW; YORK, August 9. Mr Gaynor was standing on the upper deck, with a group of frtends.. Tru 4 party were about to ,be photographed, when three shots were fired. The third penetrated Mr Gaynor's neck. A policeman clubbed and then seized the assailant, who the name of Jules James Gallagher, and described himself as an ex-watchman at the docks. "He said he fired the shots'because • Gaynor had deprived him of his bread and butter. Mr Gaynor was taken in an ambulance., to the hospital, where the bullet was heated an inch below the right ear.
