THE MEMBER FOR HAWKE'S BAY.
The member for Hawke's Bay—Mr Dillon —is a practical farmer, although he did have the misfortune to be returned to Parliament as a supporter of the Liberal Government. He knows what is good for the State and the individual in the matter of land tenures, and he has plumped for the freehold rather than betray his constituents. T~ve nty good Liberals in his constituency have asked bim to either explain his position or tender his resignation. He would, of course, have been quite justified in treating bot requests with the contempt they deserve. But Mr Dillon is a genial, good-natured man, and, rather than offend the twenty malcontents, he has explained to them that he regards his election pledges in more sacredness than he does the life of his political party. For his manly behaviour and his outspokenness he is deserving of public commendation. The pity is that he has reserved his independence of action for a period when he is reputedly about to retire from active politics.
