Mr R S. Abraham has been reelected president of the Manawatu Racing Club without opposition. H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught has accepted the presidency of the Royal Colonial Institute.
Mr and Mrs Fred Moore, formerly of "Ngaionui," Masterton, and now residing at Wanganui, are atprestn' on a visit to Masterton.
Sergeant H. Patience, of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, has been appointed instructor and drummajor of the Napier City Band. Lord Kitchener has been promoted to be a Knight of Justice in the Order of the Grand Priory of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England.
Mr James Brownlee has been appointed manager of the Barry's Bay, Akaroa, Cheese Factory. He was selected from thirty-six applicants. He was a pupil of Mr Sawers, at Stirling..
The death is reportfd in Timaru of a Crimean and an Indian veteran named Mr Cbas. Massey. He saw active service, and came to Timaru 42 years ago, having then been eight years in New Zealand.
Mr F. Stewart, who has been abattoir manager at Gore for several years, and baa been transferred to Feilding, was presented by the Borough Councillors with a silver afternoon tea set as an expression of their gosd wishes.
Mr R L. Yarr, son of Mr J. Yarr, formerly a resident of ( Masterton, and now of Napier, has beeß presented with a bronze medal by the Humane Society for rescuing a boy from drowning off the Marine P?rade beach, Napier, recently.
Mr R. McNab was tendered a complimentarv banquet in the Knapda'e Public Hall by the settlers of the district last Thursday evening, prior to severing his coi.nection with the Mataura district to take up his residence at Palmerston North. Mr William Irving presided.
The death occurred at Petone on Sunday last, at the agS of fifty-two, of Mrs Cora Vile, wife of Mr William Vile, a former resident of Clareville and Pahiatua. 2he deceasrd was a daughter of the late Mr Albert Baigant, one of the early settlers nf Nelson, and leaves a husband and grown up family to mourn her death,
By the last English mail Mrs Trask, Nelson, leceived many messages of condolence on the death of the late Hon. F. Trask, M.L.C . including letters from Lord Kanfurly and Lord Onslow, former Governors of New Zealand, who were personal friends of the family. Mrs Trask also received an acknowledment from Queen Alexandra of a message of sympathy forwarded by her on the death of his late Majesty.
It is stated that Mr George Sheat, who stood for the Riccarton seat in the Conservative interest at the last general election, and who was defeated by Mr George Witty by 1600 votes, will be a candidate ior the same electorate at the coming general election. It is also rumoured that Mr George W. Leadley, of Wakanui, will be a candidate for the Selwvn seat, at present held by Mr C. A. C."Hardy, the Conservative Whip. _
