BOWRON BROS.' CASE
APPEAL DISMISSED. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, August 4. Bowfon 8c03.' appeal against the conviction by Mr Bishop, S. M., has been dismissed with costs. Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice, said that it had been proved that the return of income for 1905 was inaccurata and knowingly made so in order to cover the forgiveness of a bad debt of £37,000 owed by a London firm to the Christehurch linn. The Court was Hot satisfied that this debt was bad, but even if it were bad it should have been placed in a special list. Sir Robert Stout added that Smith's evidence showed that he was not aware that the earnings cf the firm exceeded the amount of the return Thty had no business to treat the debt of the London firm as bad or forgive it without disclosing the '<r;i"saction in th./ return. The Court uid not access the amount to be paid, but there is an indication in >!'e statement that the return showed | iuu profits to bo £18,836, whereas j Modlin's balance sheet showed £52,418'
