PACING. TUKP NOTES. (By "Zetland."} The Awapuni trained Hydroscope broke down on Thursday last, and will therefore not betaken to Riccarton. Acceptances for the first day's events and the Grand National Hurdles at the Canterbury meeting are due on Friday night. Nero has sufficiently recovered from his lameness to be taken South, and leaves Hustings to-day. It is now stated that J. Paramore will ride Audax in the National Steeplechase. Aotea hurt his shoulder while working at Feilding an Monday, and will have to be spelled for a lengthy period. C. Jenkins is to ride Penates in the Winter Cup. The big bay has been well backed, and is now one of >he first favourites, despite being top weight with list 91b. Waikaraka is being schooled over hurdles at Awapuni, a .id so far is pleasing his trainer. Spaniard, who won a double at the Hawke's Bay Hunt meeting, is a well-bred one, being by Torpedo— Espaniola, by Sheen—Madrida.
The Hon. J. D. Ormond's team for the Canterbury winter fixture comprises Audax, Paunua and Dreadlass. The latter has been privately backnd for the Winter Cup. Pi'osp?ctor was taken down to the National meeting on Manday. The son of Gold Reef will p T "hably'be started in the Jumpers' , Fl-ic Race and the Beaufort Steeplechase. Since their arrival at Riccarton, Paisano and Electrakoff have only been allotted easy tasks, They lightened up somewhat when racing at Trentham, so witl be benefited by the respite from fast galloping. Considerable interest is at present being evinced over the Grand National Meeting, which opens on Tuesday next. The majority of horses have now arrived at tne cuuvincing ground, and as tne going lau-ly has been greatly improved, some r uliy goon form has been shown on the i...i. ing tracks. On Saturday mprniiK -\j. >ti East put up a brilliant five futl ■ itzt. the time recorded being "imm Ssuc. Loch Fyne and Te Arai were sent a round over the big obstacles, the former landing first over the last jump. Tyrannic jumped faultlessly over a mile, taking everything in fine stvle. Mahuta, Stayboy, Waitapu and Explosive set out for a mile over hurdles. The first named is improving fast, and had the best of the go. The fastest six furlongs gallop of the week, lmin 19 3-ssec, was put up by Los Angeloe. Kremlin and White Cockade galloped over four hurdles. The first named had slightly the best of the sprint, as White Cockade dwelt slightly over the obstacles. Stone Ginger acquitted himself very creditably over the big country, and is looked upon as practically certain to negotiate the Grand National <■ course. Prophet ran nine furlongs in I the good time of 2min 4 2-ssec. This horse will be ridden in his engagements by C. Cress.
