A fatal fire occurred on Saturday last, five women losing thtir lives. An electric light wire fused and set fire to a window of drapery in a shop at Accrington. The premises were crowded at the time, and the building was soon I ablaze. There was a terrible rush to the doors, and in the melee five women were euffocated, three of them being seamstresses and two customers. To make matters worse retreat from the upper storey was cut off through the main stairway breaking. The damage done amounts to £20,000 sterling. Accrington is a manufacturing town in Lancashire, 22 miles north of Manchester, having a population of about 60,000.
