Sir George Clifford, Bart. (Canterbury Jockey Club), was unanimously re-elected president ot the New Zealand Racing Conference. In connection with the leasing by Lord Islington of Mr Chas. Pharazyn's residence at Featherston. it is understood the Governor has taken it for two years. He will occupy it as a country house as opportunity offers. • Mr Thomas Neave has been appointed an Assistant Law Officer by the Government. Revs. J. C. A. Calder, Anglican, and J. D. Neill, Baptist, have been gazetted officiating minister as j under the Marriage Act.

Gazetted appointments in the Lands Department are:—Mr C. R. Pollen, Commissioner «f Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor, Hawke's Bay; Mr T. N. Brodrick, Commissioner and Chief Surveyor, Canterbury ; and Mr F. E; Greenfield, Chief Draughtsman, Nelson Lands Office. Mr P. H. Forster, of the Parliamentary died in the Hospital yesterday morning, after only three days' illness. Deceased was well known to visitors to tha ladies' gallery, of which he had been in charge for several years. After occupying the position of treasurer to the New Zealand Acclimatisation Societies' Association for several years past, Mr L. G. Reid, S. M., has handed in hi 3 lesignation by reason of the fact that his appointment to the Bench will prevent him from acting in. the future.

The death occurred on Thursday of Mr Charles Arnold, of Palmerstoo North, at the age of 38. He wan fifteen years ago a resident of the Manawatu district, but went away to the Western Australian goldfields, subsequently working in the deep levels of a Snuth African mine. There he had the misfortune to contract the dread pulmonary disease known as miners' which carried him off.
