Congsequent on the heavy rains I that bad fallen during the week ttie course was very heavy, and the times registered were therefore slow throughout. The attendance was large and representative. The general arrangements in connection with the meeting were most satisfactory, and the racing interesting from start to finish. Speculation was decidedly brisk per medium uf the while over twenty penciilers did a
thriving business. Racing commenced with the Stewards' Handicap, Royal Marine, Mataari and Marathon were prominent up to tha home turn, where Eiectrakoff, the favourite, came away and won comfortably by three lengths. This Menchikcff colt is in the WLtcr Cup at 9st 71bs.
A fine fis>ld of thirteen eonlestfd the Miramar Handicap cf siven furlongs. Elfish was made a slightly b tter favourite than Penza. From a good despatch the latter led the field into the straight, where she was joined by Multiple, with Merrie Emerald and Elfish movinsg up. In a good finish Multiple, who was one of the outsiders of the contestants, woa with plenty in handy, a head from Penza,
For the Peninsula Hurries a Bekf of seven faced the barutr. Whits Cockade was in front to the back stretch where Millennial headed him. At the next jump he again raced t« the front, and jumping well won very easily by six lengths from Gaelic, who finished fast. 'ihen came up for decision the principal flat race of the met ting, the Parliamentary Handicap, in which : some of the best mile horses in the Dominion were engaged. Of the sisteen enteted in the books, only Trcganini and Tawhaki were scratched, leaving a decidedly attractive fifli to fight out the issua On appearances in the "bird Penates, Sir Frisco, Merrie Zealand, Boliir. Rose Noble and St. Ftlix weie selected as probably the fittest candidates, and they certainty gave evidence of having und> rgone thorough preparations. Prom an even start Merrie Zealand was first to show out, while the favourite. California, wag last to move. Pass-
ing the six furlongs post Merrie Zealand was attended by St. Felix, Pet> ales, Boliir, and Moloch in this order. The Merrie England geldii ec was joined by Bollin as the straight was entered, and bir Frisco and California could be seen moving up. Ii a well fought-out finish Bollin beat Merrie Zealand, with Sir Frisco a length away, and California fourth. The latter was not given the usual preliminary, and appeared to move stiffly for over half a mile, and as. he got away very badly the distance proved too short for hsm. Merrie Zealand would have made the fiiisb even more closer than it wai bad his rider been able to use the w>.ip, and Sir Frisco got out of tbe ruck too late to get nearer than third. Twelve of New Zealand's best hurdle horses went out for the Winter Hurdles, of two mil's. Tauira was made a very solid favourite, Paisano, Woolloomooloo, Hydrant, and Mahuta also "having plenty of backers. From the barrier rise Tauira went out and quickly Jiad a good lead. Paisano then left the field to keep within easy distance ot the leader, and when a mile and a quarter had been traversed he joined hkn. A little further on he deposed laaiia. and being kept up to his work by W. Young, won by two length. Mahuta struck a hurdle after going seven furiongs, and lost h»s ■ rider.
Of the thirteen starters in the Trial Plate the Hon, J. D. Ormond'a New Zealand Cup candidate,,Morecombe, was backed as if th 3 race was a certainty for him. This proved to be the case, for as soon as the field got on the move he raced to the front, and was never caught, winning by a clear length from Tawhaki, who finished fast. The day's racing was brought to a c onclusion with the Te Ar? Handicap, of five furlongs. The full field of eighteen went to the post. The favourite. Contendent, was first to break the line. At the home turn his nearest followers were Stourton and Scotch Plaid. Tha latter challenged Contendent opposite the grandstand, but he held his position, and won hy over a length. Stourton was a fair third.
Out of the foOS? starts, the Hon. J. D. Ormond was sucessful in winning three races. The Birkenhead stock, being fine big, strong horses, were well suited to the going. The biggest dividend of the daywas paid out on the Multiform colt, Multiple, backers selecting Penz i to win. The heavy going btat the latter, while Multiple galloped very freely through it. Paisano's performance in the Winter Hurdles was full of merit, as he galloped fast and jumped really welL He will now have to carry 12st lib in the National Hurdles.
Mahuta was going alon? ccirfottably in third position when he struck an obstacle. It is considerel that he wouM have taken ahaaiii the finish with Taaira and Paisano. tut for this mistake.
