GAMBLING IN LAND.

The Farmers' Union Conference today decided that the disposal of Crown lands by ballot had undoubtedly encouraged gambling in land, and made a number oi suggestions for embodying in the Land Bill this session. It was resolved to ask the Governinent'to consider the disadvantages suffered by country children wit i the present syllabus;, also that efforts should be made to have school children medically examined; that imported hardwood be admitted ! duty free, and no differential rate be made in rail carriage of N.w Zspland and imported timber; that the construction of public works by | co-operative labour should stop, and all works of any magnitude be done by tender; that attention" be called ; to the discrepancy between the moneys voted by Parliament and the j amount expended; that the question of grants to the Public WorKs (Department of Roads and Bridges) be i thoroughly gone into, and the Minister of Public Works approached with a view to the remodelling of the system; that ths Minister of Public Works be asked that moneys voted by Parliament be available within a reasonable time, so that work may be carried on in summer time; that the Premier be requested to insert in his Land Bill clause 51 of the Land Bill of last year, providing for the exchange of land for roads or any public purpose; that the Government continue and largely extend the good work done >n connecting the back country with the telephone system. The following officers were elect ed:—Dominion Piesider.t, Mr J. G. Wilson, of Bulls; Vice-President, Mr G. W. Leadley, of Rakanui; Ad visory Committee, Messrs J. C. Cooper, Tane; 13. J. Richards, Levin; F. F. Hockley, Hunterville; D. McGregor, Masterton; Treasurer, Mr W. J. Birch, Marton. A deputation waited on (he Prime Minister afterwards, laying before him the decisions of the conference, and Sir Joseph Ward promised to give them careful consideration.
