'FRISCO MAIL SERVICE.
Auckland has still hopes of receiving the San Francisco mail service. According to the Star there is at present at Sydney a representative of the management ol Spreckles' Line of steamers, whose visit ia partially in connection with the revival of the 'Fri sco Sydney service, which was formerly maintained by tha Sierra, | Sonoma, and Ventura. The idea is to re-establish the line upon the Ameri- | can Ship Subsidy Bill being passed, and to touild two up to-date vessels, with large passenger accommodation and refrigerated space for thecarriage of Australian meats and butter. These would be oil-burners, and the Sierra, Sonoma, and Ventura woulc in time be recommiasioned for th< trade and converted into oil-burner; too. The fleet would be ready with' In a year from the passing of the Subsidy Bill. It seems that the - Beef Trust in the United States prevents packers outside the combine procuring enough meat for tha purposes of trade excepting at the rates stipulated by the Trust. These are the people who are locking to Australia for their supplies, mutton and butter especially being mentioned, as they believe they can land these commodities in the states as cheaply as they can be bought there. The steamers would maintain a speed of from 15 to 37 knots, and the service would be a fortnightly one. This would afford a direct, regular, and quick mail service with America, Special freight rates would be arranged for Australian products required in the United States, aud the extra space provided by the substitution of oil for Jstearn
would be utilised |for cargo. An alternative proposal is that failing a subsioy from the United States Government for a line of mail steamers a regular service of cargo steamers be established with refrigerated | space for the carriage of "col 3" steff from Sidney to 'Frisco. |
